The photo and film festival at this conference will be a first time attempt during these meetings to present the canopies through photographs. The presentation of these ecosystems in such popular media is targeted to reach the larger public, and also encourage the use of visual media as a very effective tool in outreach and environmental education.

We would like to seek the support and participation of the public to present these unique habitats to help create awareness amongst the larger public. Please treat this as an open invitation to one and all to participate in this event:

Terms and Conditions

  • Theme: The theme of the photo competition is ‘Canopy – the last biotic frontier’. The photographs should reflect the theme of the competition. We strongly discourage routine bird on branch, animal sitting on a tree sort of photographs. Photographs should have a creative element in them.
  • This competition is open for amateurs and serious amateur photographers.
  • The photographs should not have won prizes in any other photography competition.
  • Submission: All photos should be submitted through the web ftp portal. Participants are required to create an account with their first and last names as the user name and are advised against using ambiguous usernames.
  • Number of Entries: Maximum of five photographs can be submitted with 1000 pixels in the maximum dimension. The shortlisted entries should submit high resolution photographs for final judging.
  • Details of the Photographs: Digital/film, equipment, exposure information and details of post-production should be provided for each image. Images should be in s-RGB space without frame and borders.
  • Post-Processing: No changes or modification of the image incorporating any new element will be accepted. Digitally introducing new elements or objects or removing objects or elements in the original image will not be accepted. The image must be a true representation of what was photographed. Combining or sandwiching two or more images will not be permitted. Details of post processing must be mentioned (see 6). Post processing should be limited to: Noise / dust / spot removal, resizing / cropping, colour correction, adjustment of brightness / contrast / levels, selective blurring or sharpening.
  • Entry Fee: An entry fee of Rs 100 will be charged for Indians and USD 5 for foreign participants for EACH photograph that will be submitted. Those who fail to pay the entries fees before the due date will be disqualified.
  • Mode of Payment: Please follow the guidelines mentioned under INDIAN or FOREIGN participants as applicable:

INDIAN PARTICIPANTS: All Indian participants are requested to follow the below mentioned steps to register.
CAUTION: Indian participants are strictly advised not to transfer any amount to the FRCA account applicable for foreign participants.

  1. 1. Please draw a demand draft (cheques will not be accepted) for the applicable amount mentioned in the registration fee table. Demand draft should be in favour of Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment, Bangalore

10. It is mandatory to mention the correct current email id and the ONLY mode of communication is through email.

11. Deadline: Last date for submitting the pictures is Oct 9, 2009. Short-listed participants will be intimated on Oct 12, 2009. Last date for sending the high resolution images is Oct 19, 2009. Final prizes will be announced on Oct 26, 2009.

12. Three prizes will be awarded and 20 best photographs will be exhibited during International canopy conference 2009, from 25th to 30th October 2009.

13 .In addition to the First, Second and Third prizes, 30 Certificates of ‘Honourable Mention’ will be awarded. Irrespective of the number of submissions, an entrant will be eligible to receive only one prize.

14. Even though the copyright will rest with the photographer, ATREE may use the pictures for non-commercial, purposes or reproduction in the future. ATREE is not obliged to make any payments either in cash or kind to the photographers. By participating in the competition, participants give their consent to the use of their photographs by ATREE for its non-commercial, promotional publications/ materials.

15. The Organizers shall not be held responsible for non-performance of any obligation cast on them by these rules due to the occurrence of any Force Majeure event including, which the Organizers cannot reasonably prevent or control.

16. Disputes of any kind will be heard by a Committee comprising the Conveners of the Canopy Conference and the Jury of the contest. Their decision will be final and binding. All disputes will be subject to the Bangalore jurisdiction.
